Lydia in Movement – Tomorrow

camera obscura to kharamana

documentation : 26.3.2017 – this simple documentary format attempts to convey more of the dancer’s personality. Functionally, the video was made for other purposes and for dancers who know. A brief departure from the otherwise common full-height capture offers its own unique rewards, making it all more about the person and less about space and props. Finally rendered in old style, the normal viewer gets a chance to enjoy the gift of imagination.

this still unfolding preoccupation has developed whereas, now not only do I find myself more receptive to light and movement, but also enjoying the almost cathartic experience of albeit light conversations on the histories that inspire these arts.

reflections on shooting stage – it’s almost impossible to document without bias, as everything presentational is to varying degrees influenced by idiosyncrasy – i tend to believe therefore that trusting in the medium could very well be about as wise as trusting in the inherent truthfulness of the written word.

artifice

If creating an artifice though interesting brings no particular value and is essentially unimportant, and documentation is a truthful depiction or accurate copy of a place, then where exactly does whose artistic interpretation begin, with choice of a pencil over a pen or a brush over an iPhone? How to strike balance between the truthful objectivity of documentation and the inherently biased orchestration of art in imagery? Is all photography fiction – death of a moment in that it captures one that no longer exists?

balance

one shooter’s experience of dance photography in berlin – portrait still unstill – i think it’s always better to know a person or character before one can reasonably expect them, as subject, to really show something of their souls, or at least that of ‘what’ they seek to articulate. what less than collective meaning making will do?

dragon shoot – first retrospective

Everything ran relatively smoothly – generally as planned, however the “artful perfectionist” in me wonders how I will truly document the event that was. All things considered, I shall call it what it is and write it off as a relatively successful first attempt. What Went Right As mentioned in the first post both characters…

dragon shoot

Dragon Shoot Done: it took place on August 21, 2016. First and foremost I’d like to extend a world of gratitude to everyone who helped to make it happen. Approach: Instead of simply asking dancers to put on their best face for the shoot, each was assigned a character to portray.

EMA Project 003 – spring 2016

Finally the second has arrived “EMA X-phase 2” as I like to call it, and the selected images are on the wall to show for it. Many people have asked why I go through the trouble, but it is still a kind of volunteered slavery – a term I picked up from this guy’s jazz,…

mokkabar berlin – any given sunday

There’s not much more to it, the jam is jazzy and I’m royal blue. At least I got a spot close to the music. Oh joy silver traps in the house tonight, two saxes a vibraphone and a base – and look the congas in cream just walked in. 20-3-16. >> featured image –…

a bitter sweet thing – part 1

most everything a dancer does is beautiful. a more interesting challenge i find, is in choosing the best frames for the meaning the dancer attempts to convey – in quick sequence and moody lights – and in balancing that with being true to the scene as i see it. a final image works for me…

EMA Project 003 – EXHIBITION 1

three fears

i have three fears. the first is of political non-participation, an apathy which grows on its own lack and prevalence gleans, even within a just society of clear and present democratic means. i fear the ignorant mass – the horde of would be non-affected, afflicted – grave, in sparkly emperor’s garbs that the piper man…

let *art be free

“The Hatter’s farts were arts in parts where farts were arts to them. Then the proud farts became loud farts and were just farts again.” My brother’s response to “like anxiety” and the rather fun question on art vs. kitsch.

EMA 003 for the Show

Good Luck for the Show! I’d like to also take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to all the participants, for helping to make the recent photo-shoot project a success. It was tiny in comparison to this, “Alice in Wonderland”, but I look forward to catching some moments there too. And I’m sure I speak…

EMA Project 003 – UNFOLDS

Who knows how much I’m still being influenced by the idea of dynamic-stability put to me at Lancaster, the constructivist paradigm, notions of a certain democratic ideal; a fascination with relationships that define whole systems from within, wastes and values, art and kitsch – my flower-fetish, words and expression, or plain and simple, down and…

Who owns your digital identity? If memories are what we are made of, the stuff that makes us who we are and gives meaning to the all the things we hold dear – as our digital selves emerge and find legs and hands and wings, where will we wake up to find ourselves after we’ve given so much of it to Facebook, Google, Telecom providers, and all the cool connected gadgets and click-services that never forget? Google is what it is and so is fBook but they are not the internet Who would seek to [own] our digital-selves before we even recognise our own ‘click-footprint’, as that which fundamentally shapes to our digital-identity? This…
